The USA Volleyball Beach High Performance Program will be more exclusive in 2017. The program, that is the pipeline to international and ultimately Olympic competition, is narrowing its focus to service a smaller group of athletes who have been selected as potential candidates to represent the United States in international competition. Here are the changes that will have the most impact on the Puget Sound Region Beach HP Program.
1. USA Volleyball Regions will no longer be able to send teams directly to the USA Volleyball Beach High Performance Championship
For the previous five years, Puget Sound Region teams have been able to travel to the High Performance Championship in Southern California. The event featured the best competition from throughout the USA Volleyball pipeline. Starting in 2017, teams from the Puget Sound Region will have to qualify for the HP Championship by winning a zonal high performance competition.
2. The Puget Sound Region can send one team per age group to the Pacific Zonal HP Competition
This year, teams who wish to represent the Puget Sound Region in the High Performance Championship will have to play in a zonal qualifier in early June. Based on the request for proposals distributed by USA Volleyball, the only Region within the Pacific Zone (which includes Puget Sound, Evergreen, Columbia Empire, Norcal, Aloha, Moku O Keawe, Alaska and Inter-Mountain) who has a facility that meets the requirements to host is Norcal. They are reportedly looking for dates to host the event in Santa Cruz. The likely dates being considered at this point are June 6-14. The event would include an A2 HP training camp and the zonal tournament. It is possible at this point that the dates could be adjusted to accommodate the last days of school in most of the Puget Sound Region.
3. National High Performance Tryouts will not take place within the Regions this Spring.
The National USA Beach High Performance tryouts are planning on being held on a zonal basis this Spring with the resumption of a wider HP tryout network coming into place in the fall of 2017. Not a lot of details are known about this change at this time, but it is assumed that the tryouts that took place in Snohomish and Portland last Spring will not be taking place again this year. It is unclear when and how the zonal tryout process for the National USA Volleyball Beach HP programs will take place. More information will be distributed when it becomes available.
The PSR Beach HP Tryout Tournament is scheduled for May 13/14 at Willis Tucker Park in Snohomish. More details about this event will be made available as they are finalized.
